Join RCR as we explore one of the great masterworks of Renaissance Polyphony. Lassus’ Lagrime di S. Pietro (tears of Saint Peter) is a collection of 20 spiritual madrigals setting the poetry of Luigi Tansillo (1510-68). The works stands as Lassus’ final composition, and was dedicated to Pope Clement VIII on May 24, 1594, three weeks before the composer’s death. Published in Munich the following year, the collection ends with a Latin motet Vide homo, quae pro te patior (Behold, man, how I suffer for you) in the voice of Christ. Written for 7-voices throughout, and built on the symmetrical and symbolic structure that progresses through modes I-VII (mode VIII is omitted and the final motet is in the tonus peregrinus), the collection serves as an anthology of Lassus’ compositional style and a magnum opus. Don’t miss a chance to experience this exquisite, and sadly, neglected work.
